Competing at the NPC USA Championship in Las Vegas last July was an experience I will never forget. What made the contest so memorable was the group of dedicated athletes who held my hand through my very first out-of-state competition. The seasoned competitors I traveled with to Vegas showed me the value of community in this sport. Not only did they help plan the logistics of my entire trip, but they also went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed to look and feel my best. I think the most important thing I learned from my teammates this year was how to make diet food taste great without compromising the necessary macronutrients needed to help sustain lean muscle mass. This method of clean eating has opened up a whole new world for me. I look forward to coming home from work and experimenting with healthy options to turn my meals into something I really enjoy. Eating clean and tasty food makes staying on point easier. "So as long as it's in my macros" was the quote of the day. If you get the necessary percentages of protein, carbs, and fat in each meal, you are able to turn anything clean into something tasty. One of the best recipes I got was from my fellow teammate, Jacqueline Thomas. She gave me her recipe for a guilt-free sweet potato donut. You take sweet potatoes, egg whites, protein powder, and cinnamon and mix it into a batter then pour it into a donut mold and bake for 30-45 min. The community aspect of this sport has made such a positive impact on my life. The bond we built on this trip is so tight that not a day goes by without my teammates texting one another. We arrange cheat dinners every other week where we can enjoy our re-feeds after a long weeks of training and disciplined eating. We look forward to these dinners not only because we get to eat what we want but also because we get are able to talk and share our experiences. It's a wonderful feeling to connect with others who understand this lifestyle and have a passion for it.
